About the Benton MacKaye Trail
The Benton MacKaye Trail (BMT) is a long-distance trail that goes through the states of Georgia, Tennessee, and North Carolina, starting in Springer Mountain, Georgia, and ending in Big Creek, North Carolina, in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It shares the first few miles with the Appalachian Trail and, in fact, is named after Benton MacKaye, who is credited with first having the idea of the Appalachian Trail. The trail itself takes you through multiple protected areas with smooth rolling hills, thick woodlands, lots of rivers, waterfalls, and creeks, and with plenty of wildlife.
