About the Sout West Coast Path

The South West Coast Path (other called South West Coastal Path) is a long-distance hike in South West England, that crosses the Somerset, Devon, Cornwall, and Dorset regions along the coastline. It's one of the longest thru-hikes in England, starting at Minehead and ending at Poole Harbour. It's also one of the oldest hiking trails - originally used for patrolling the coastguard and fully opened as a hiking trail in 1978. Although it's a fairly easy hike, it can be a bit tedious because the coastline isn't flat. Each river crossing is pretty much at sea level, but between them, the trail goes up much higher, even up to 318 m altitude at the Great Hangman, so the total elevation gain is quite high. That said, it's a very rewarding hike because it offers excellent coastal scenery in combination with culture from countless smaller coastal towns. Another similar long-distance trail is the Wales Coast Path - an even longer coastal trail starting just north of the South West Coast Path.
